Saudi Arabia in the News: "Saudi Prince to Build Tallest Building" - CNN.com October 13,2008

Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal of the Saudi Royal Family will build the world’s tallest building according to an October 13, 2008 article on CNN.com.

The project, called Kingdom Tower, will be over 1,000 meters (3280.84 ft) high in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It will be home to five-star hotel accommodations, office space and luxury residences, each with breathtaking views of the Red Sea, Obhur Creek and the mountains to the east. Part of Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal’s firm, Kingdom Holding Company, Kingdom Tower will be the centerpiece of a larger real-estate project – The Kingdom City. The entire Kingdom City project is expected to span 23 million square meters and cost US$26.7 billion (100 billion Saudi riyals).

The sky-high Kingdom Tower will surpass Burj Dubai tower of the United Arab Emirates, as the current world's tallest man-made structure. News of its construction came as little surprise in what seems to be, in the Middle East, a skyscraper race to the top. Dubai recently announced the construction of Nakheel Tower, also to reach 1 km (3280.84 ft) in height, and Kuwait has plans for its own architectural novelty – the City of Silk.
