A Review of Websites for Expats in the Middle East

Joyce Goodwin

Since working abroad is becoming more common, countless websites for expatriates are popping up on the internet. We took a look at some of the more popular ones:

@llo' Expat is an information portal and forum for 89 countries. It contains country-specific chat forums (e.g. general talks, news, tips; jobs; housing and relocation; etc.), classifieds, news; etc. – it also has annoying sponsored links, but you can just ignore them. Countries in the Middle East include: Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai.

Expat Focus contains expat chat forums (e.g. general talks; employment; education; housing and relocation; etc.); classifieds; news; general information about the countries; an expat focus blog; etc. Also has annoying sponsored links – but fewer than @llo' Expat has – but you can just ignore them too. Countries in the Middle East include: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE.

ExpatExchange.com is a large, information-filled site on expat life and issues. It has discussion forums and information for most Middle Eastern countries, including: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and Kuwait.

Expat-Blog.com (Middle East) contains links to blogs from expats from various nations in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, etc. Check out the expats' blogs and see which ones you like.

ExpatsInSaudiArabia Yahoo! Group was formed in 1998 and has 3,473 members as of June 2008. It's a place to ask questions and exchange information. (It notes that any comments of a political or religious nature will be removed.)

ExpatWomen.com provides links and resources geared to women. It includes blogs and stories (and some annoying sponsored ads). It has an international focus, but has some links to articles/blogs for Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar.

CanuckAbroad.com is Canadian-focused (obviously) site about working abroad in general. It has a Canadians in the Middle East forum.

BritishExpats.com is a British-focused (obviously) site about working abroad in general. It has some Saudi and UAE information, in their Middle East section.

EscapeArtist.com has an international focus, which contains articles and information about relocation, etc. The only current Middle East section is for Dubai.

Working in Saudi Arabia Blog blogs on various topics involving working in Saudi (e.g., bringing pets, drivers' licenses, dealing with the police, etc.). It is full of annoying sponsored links. And it has somewhat of an Indian expat focus.
